923,000 GAMES ROLLED IN A SINGLE DAY

Industry Also Reports Record Year-Upon-Year Growth with Participation Having Climbed by 2.7% to over 71 Million Between April '09 and March '10

ARLINGTON, Texas, August 31, 2010 - Long one of America's most beloved national pastimes, bowling continues to see record levels of participation in what has been a period of tremendous resurgence in popularity for the industry. The Bowling Proprietors' Association of America (BPAA), the industry's premier trade organization representing 4,000 bowling centers, released new growth statistics that point to the vitality of bowling, which continues to maintain its status as the nation's number one participatory sport.

The BPAA reported today that on World Record Day (August 7) - the culmination of National Bowling Week (July 31 to August 7), the industry set a new world record of most games played in a single day for the third consecutive year. Within a 24-hour period, 923,948 games were played across the 1,252 centers that reported as of the cut-off date, setting a new benchmark of success for the industry.

Coupled with the World Record Day news, the BPAA also announced record participation levels during the full year of April 2009 to March 2010. Driven by heightened participation from women and younger bowlers, the industry saw a 2.7% increase in consumer participation with more than 71 million having bowled during the twelve month time frame.

"From coast-to-coast, we are seeing a tremendous period of growth and vitality for the bowling industry, as evidenced by the records that are being shattered year after year," said Steve Johnson, executive director of BPAA. "From women and young adults who are just becoming bowling enthusiasts to boomers, who are falling back in love with the game, many are discovering and rediscovering that bowling isn't just the greatest sport, it's a lot of fun too."

Below is a history of World Record Day participation over the past three years:

2010 - 923,948 games across 1,252 centers

2009 - 741,821 games across 1,044 centers

2008 - 548,721 games across 808 centers

The new bowling world record is recognized by the Bowling Proprietors' Association of America (BPAA), United States Bowling Congress (USBC), Strike Ten Entertainment, the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) and the International Bowling Pro Shop and Instructors Association (IBPSIA).

A New World Record is Made
Stephen Shanabrook, 24, of Plano, Texas broke the Guinness World Record of the Longest Marathon Ten-Pin Bowling on Saturday, July 17th. The previous longest tenpin bowling marathon world record was held by Stuart Ridley, 32, of New Zealand who bowled for 5 days and 2 hours straight at Strike Entertainment Centre in September 2009. Stephen bowled for 5 days, 4 hours and 45 minutes at Plano Super Bowl.
Below is an interview he gave shortly after finishing his amazing feat.
What was the most difficult part?
Probably transitioning from a period where I had a full sleep schedule to one where it was very limited. I was only allowed one or two hours per day, so it was a really difficult adaptation for my body to get used to. It was really hard on me the first three days; but I adapted into it the last couple. That’s what helped me make it through the last three days.
Was the challenge more physical or mental?
I would say the whole process was about 70% mental and 30% physical for me. I felt like I was in good shape physically, but every person who does something like this finds themselves at that physical wall and you have to have the mental ability to go through that wall and keep going. I bumped into that wall many times this week, and it was the help from family and friends and encouragement that kept me going.

Were the toughest times the early morning hours?
Yes. Probably between 1:00am and 3:00 am, because it was dead quiet in the center, and there weren’t very many people around; maybe a handful. My support group helped through those times. Thank goodness we had a lot of night owls. When they saw me struggling, they would bring me some food, or snack, or some kind of power drink, or they would talk to me and keep me going.
Were there any moments of panic when you thought it wouldn’t last much longer?
I think toward the end of day one and the start of day two. At the end of day one I was exhausted after being up for more than 24 hours, because I had planned my sleep schedule to only one hour per day to maximize the breaks I got, so I could accumulate minutes of break time. At the start of day two, I felt sort of sick. I don’t know what it was from, but I had to fight my way through it. Once I got some food into my system, it calmed down and I was able to re-focus my energy.
It is amazing that you are this coherent right now.
Actually, I am not nearly as foggy now as I was on Wednesday. Then, if you had said something to me, I might have wondered what language you were speaking, but my body adjusted, and I have been able to function pretty well the past couple of days.
At what point did you first think “I’m going to make it?”
That would have to be about mid-day Thursday when I had, maybe not a second wind, but a new burst of energy. I could see the finish line and thought this really was possible, so I kept going and kept pushing and said to myself “This is going to happen.”
Does doing this give you a lot of confidence to accomplish other goals in your life?
Without a doubt. Something this challenging is huge; to come out on top. This proves that if you set your sights high, you can go in that direction.

PBA Regional Player Sets 2 New Records

The previous record of 40 consecutive strikes by Jeanne Naccarato during the 1986 Women's Central States Tournament fell on 11 May by Tommy Gollick.
Tom is a PBA regional player from Oberlin, Pa put together 47 straight strikes in a scratch league at Red Crown Bowling Center in Harrisburg, Pa.
Gollick started the four-game session by leaving a 4-10 split and going 9-out. He didn't shoot another spare the rest of the night, finishing game 1 with 279 and then rolling three consecutive 300s for a four-game total of 1179 - also a record.

22/23 May 10. Kegel Training Center in Lake Wales, FL put on the End of Year Tournament which started Saturday with qualifying for the upper division. Rachel Vaughn lead qualifying with 1347; Michael Coffey 2nd; Greg Young 3rd and David Lance 4th. Later in the day the Lower Division completed the Match Play Championships in the U13 Boys Division with Greg Young finishing 1st and David Lance finishing 2nd. On Sunday the Upper Division of the Boys and Girls division competed with Rachel Vaughn making it to the final match against Dayna Galganski and finished 2nd. The Boys Upper Division had David Lance finish 4th (making it to the final four) and Greg Young finish 5th.

The top 12 bowlers in each division returned for match-play competition and the TV styles roll-offs. In the Upper Division: Elise Bolton continued to dominate the tournament maintaining her hold on the field by being the leader after match-play and in first place for TV Style roll off. Michael Coffey throughout match play moved himself into second position, setting up the two locals for a roll-off at the title. Michael Coffey prevails and wins his second title at Shore Lanes. Greg Young finished 8th after match-play.
Lower Divison: After match-play David Lance finished in 2nd, Rachel Vaughn finished in 3rd place and Kyle Gordon was 8th, setting up a Lance/Vaughn TV style roll for 2nd position with Lance prevailing with a 278 game and moving him on to the championship game against Mike Wiszowaty. Lance/Wiszowaty match puts Lance as the victor with a 265 game and his first title in the lower division.

Rachel Vaughn had the best average in the area at 201 average. She also placed third at the District 8 tournament, and helped Centennial to an 11-0 regular-season finish. For her accomplishments, she has been named the Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers All-Area Girls Bowler of the Year. Also Vaughn was selected Female Bowler of the Year for Port St. Lucie West Centennial. Rachel was named in the September issue of Bowlers Journal International as one of the top 30 prep female bowling prospects in the country.

13-year-old Greg Young shoots in Loschetter Youth Tournament on PBA Viper pattern

Gregory Young, 13 years old of Viera, Fla., shot a 300 game on the PBA Viper pattern, the most versatile of the five named patterns, during a Loschetter Youth Tournament at Shore Lanes in Merritt Island, Fla., on Nov. 13. The Loschetter Youth Tournament is named after PBA exempt player Chris Loschetter (pictured right) and is run by his parents and a lot of volunteers. It is a scratch tournament broken into two divisions (upper and lower) for the youth players up to 21 years of age. This tournament travels to different parts of the state of Florida every month and has a Tournament of Champions events at the end of their year.Greg started bowling at the age of eight (pictured) in a Saturday league at Satellite Beach Lanes, Fla. in 2004.The picture shows Gregory when he was eight and just got his first bowling balls. "His grandma and grandpa signed him up," Greg's mother Sandy Young told Bowlingdigital.com. "They are his biggest fans. You do not ask either one of them how he is doing in bowling. They will go on and on...... They are very proud of him."In 2004, still at the age of eight, he became the Grand Champion of the Junior Tournament of Bowlers in Merritt Island, Fla. "His competitors were mostly in high school. The second and third place winners picked him up and put him on there shoulders," Sandy said. "That was an eye opener for me that he had some talent. He stood knee high against these bowlers and won it!"Greg meets weekly with his coach Tom Blasco and also bowls weekly in a sport league at Shore Lanes in Merritt Island. On top of that he also practices at least three days a week on his game. Every weekend he is somewhere in the state of Florida at a tournament.Greg has bowled three 300 games before, all in practice, never during a tournament. His first perfecto came during practice with coach Blasco on March 21, 2008 just turning 12 years old."He has bowled two more 300 games during practice," Sandy said. "He would have been dying to get one during a tournament or league."Greg was close to accomplish the feat during another Loschetter Youth Tournament at Shore Lanes in Palm Bay, Fla. on Sept. 13th when he bowled a 299 on the PBA Cheetah pattern.The picture shows Greg with his idol, PBA super star Norm Duke, which was taken two weeks ago in Palm Bay. Greg got to bowl with him. Finally two month later he bowled his first registered 300 on the PBA Viper pattern. According to Sandy "there was not a dry eye in the house".This year will be Greg Young's first time going to the Junior Gold tournament in Indianapolis. He has already won his Junior Gold spot at a Kegel tournament last month."Going to Kegel monthly and bowling in these tournaments on all types of lane surfaces is also helping his game," Sandy states. "Kegel is currently the only tournament Gregory gets to bowl with his age group. All the other tournaments he participates, he has to be in the upper division bowling with the best of them. So this keeps him working hard at his game."Greg currently has won three consecutive tournaments at Kegel in Lake Wales, Fla. in his division (13 and younger)."As a mom Gregory's greatest strengths are he does not loose his temper and he is real team player and respects his competitors, which I find is just as valuable to have besides knowing how to play the game well," Sandy said."The younger bowlers along with the college bowlers have a great deal of respect for him due to this. Nothing goes to his head he is very humble."

Weekend Tournaments

Keystone Championships

Local bowlers, Elise Bolton (13 yrs old) and Gregg Young (10 yrs old) travel to Cleveland, OH to participate in the Junior Keystone Championships. Both bowler's qualified well and made the round of match-play. Winning their first match and moving up through match-play opponents, Elise and Gregg finished 3rd in their respective divisions. Congrats to our young bowlers and continue the good work.

Kegel Elite Team #1 returns to Las Vegas to defend title and posts a second team to accept the challenge. Both teams qualified high in the 4th and 5th positions to put themselves in good position for match play. After match play both teams positioned themselves for the finals. Kegel Elite Team #1 was first and Kegel Elite Team #2 was in the fourth position. After the finals the Kegel Elite Team #1 finished 2nd by 14 pins and Kegel Elite Team #4 maintained their 4th position. Congrats to all the participants.

JUNIOR BOWLER - IMPORTANT INFORMATION

To all our junior bowlers and their families,

The United States Bowling Congress (USBC) is in the process of making changes in their rules that will affect all junior bowlers. The JBT thinks most of these rules are not in the best interest of junior bowling and we are fighting for what we think is right. If you visit http://www.bowl.com/ most of the changes are explained there.
Out biggest concerns/complaints involve:

1. Beginning next season, the USBC will REQUIRE all certified tournaments to use their banking system (it's called SMART) for scholarship money. The JBT has always handled it's own scholarship money since we began awarding scholarships in the late 1980's and has had no problems. If we use SMART, we will receive less or possibly NO interest on the money they hold. This interest is crucial in helping add to the prize list of many of our special events in which you compete. This is not fair to you!
2. Beginning next season, the USBC will ELIMINATE rings, watches, etc that are awarrded for honor scores such as 300, 800 and 700 for girls. They believe these awards may endanger your eligibity in other sports. It sure hasn't stopped football, basketball and other high school sports teams from awarding rings to their champions. This has not been a problem in the past and we feel they are trying to fix something that isn't broken. This is one less set of awards available to you even though the sanction fee is set to INCREASE. These rings, etc will be available for you to PURCHASE if you "earn" one.
3. If the JBT (and other organizations) refuse to allow USBC to earn interest on our money, our events will not be certified by the USBC. We are trying to find a way to work with the USBC to avoid this from happening, but it doesn't look promising. We are not willing to sacrifice prize money from YOUR special events by allowing USBC to keep the interest earned on JBT scholarship funds.
4. If we are not certified, we will not be permitted to run Junior Gold qualifying events next season during our regular events. We are also trying to find a solution to this problem, but the best we can hope for is a few events to be run, which will result in fewer of our bowlers qualifying for the Junior Gold tournament in Buffalo next July.

The Junior Bowlers Tour is not alone in their stance against these changes. Almost all similar organizations around the country are disappointed and outraged at what USBC is doing to the tournament groups, leagues, local associations, bowling centers and MOST OF ALL the junior bowlers.
Please make yourself aware of what is happening that threatens the quality of junior bowling everywhere. Thee is a message board which has started a thread about this subject. Please read it and feel free to comment (don't be confused by the name of the link).

NEW LOCATION FOR BOWLERS CORNER PRO SHOP: Bowlers Corner has moved since the bowling center (Satellite Beach Lanes) has been closed. The new location can be reached easily from the Eau Gaillie Causeway and the Pineda Causeway by just turning on to South Patrick Drive.

From the Eau Gallie Causeway:
Just after crossing the last bridge while heading toward the beach, turn left at the red light on to South Patrick Drive. Continue up (north) into Satellite Beach and just past the Fire Station and Lori Lane Plaza look for the Ocean Spray Car Wash and immediately turn right on to Sherwood Avenue. Bowlers Corner is the second building on the right, Suite 108, back in the corner.

From the Pineda Causeway:
There are two ways to reach Bowlers Corner. (1). Heading toward the beach, exit after the last bridge to Patrick AFB. At the red light, turn right and head south into Satellite Beach past Jackson Ave and the Civic Center. Just south is a Quik Stop convenient store, turn right on Sherwood Ave. Bowlers Corner is the second building on the right, Suite 108, back in the corner. (2). Heading toward the beach go to the end of the Causeway and turn right (south) at the light on to A1A Highway and head into Satellite Beach. Upon approaching Jackson Ave you will see the Publix Shopping Center, MacDonalds, Walgreens and Satellite Beach Auto Center (Blue Building) and turn right on to Jackson Ave. Follow Jackson Ave to the red light and turn left (south). Drive to the Quik Stop and turn left on Sherwood Ave. Bowlers Corner is the second building on the right, Suite 108, back in the corner.

USBC Communication-Bowling Ball Specs Task Force

Positive dialogue and cooperation characterized the initial meeting of the USBC Bowling Ball Specifications Task Force Oct 1. USBC representatives and technical volunteers from 13 bowling ball manufacturers held positive discussions about several different bowling ball performance issues and how those can impact the credibility and integrity of the sport. The discussion included:
o Bowling ball compliance agreements
o Review of new and existing bowling ball specifications
o Possible modification or elimination of existing bowling ball specifications
o Credibility issues in bowling
o Ball motion and dynamic ball performance
o Possible recommendation of additional bowling ball specifications
o Discussion and investigation into the possible adoption of dynamic bowling ball performance measures
o Future meetings

Representative from bowling ball manufacturers described the meeting as constructive. Steve Kloempken, Storm Technical Director, Mo Pinel, President MoRich Enterprises, Inc and representatives from Brunswick, Circle Athletics, Columbia Industries Inc, Dyno-Thane, Ebonite International, Hammer, Lane #1, Lane Masters, Roto Grip, Track Inc and Visionary Bowling Products have agreed to sit on the task force.

This should be a pat on the back to all involved for ensuring that all the players are on the same page and looking out for the bowling community.
